The Joint Distribution Committee today announced a gift of $5,000 for the relief of victims of the recent earthquake and tidal waves in Chile. Moses A. Leavitt, JDC executive vice-chairman, announced that the funds are to be turned over to Chilean authorities through the JDC office in Buenos Aires.
The gift from the JDC is for general non-sectarian relief, Mr. Leavitt indicated. Special grants may be made at a later date to the Chilean Jewish community, when the extent of damage to Jewish institutions has been determined. Henry Levy, JDC director. for Latin America, has been assigned to make an emergency survey in Chile, and to give some indication of future reconstruction needs. Early reports indicate that Jewish communities in Southern Chile have suffered major property losses.
