The Joint Distribution Committee is making emergency cash grants to some 3,000 Tunisian Jews who are in immediate need as a result of economic dislocations caused by the recent anti-French riots and strikes in that country, the J.D.C. announced here today. Half of the recipients of the emergency grants live in Tunis and the remainder are in small communities scattered throughout the North African country.
The emergency grants will total 1,800,000 francs a month the J.D.C. said. This will be in addition to the regular J.D.C. assistance program in Tunisia which costs 9,500,000 francs monthly. Part of the emergency funds will go to Jews whose businesses were wrecked by Arab mobs. The organization also reported today that its regular program has been functioning despite the outbreaks of violence.
