Loans by a special housing fund of the Joint Distribution Committee to refugees from North Africa in France, have reached a total of $200,000, Charles Jordan, European JDC director, reported today.
He said the past 12 months represented a record in loans from JDC loan institutions. He reported that 41 such loan agencies in 19 countries provided 7, 095 loans totaling $3,368,000, an increase of 337 loans and $250,000 over the previous 12-month period. Loans were made in Australia, Israel, South America, France, Poland and Italy to help integrate 1, 680 refugee and repatriated families.
Mr. Jordan noted that loan applications still pending from Tunisian families will require far more funds than the original estimates and that additionally funds “will have to be vastly expanded to meet the needs of thousands of Algerian Jews now in France whose major economic problem now is housing.”
