Of the 525,000 Jewish refugees who have fled Nazi domination since 1933 when Hitler rose to power, 258,800 were aided in their escape by the Joint Distribution Committee, it was disclosed in the first issue of the organization’s monthly information bulletin, the “J.D.C. Digest,” published this week.
The eight-page publication contains brief descriptions of the J.D.C. work throughout the world. It covers such subjects as major J.D.C. appropriations for the first three months of this year, the continuance of emigration from the Old to the New World, the shipment of medicines to Polish refugees in Russia, and the work on behalf of immigrants in Central and South America. “It is the purpose of the Digest to keep American Jews, who make possible the humanitarian work of the J.D.C, informed of its far-flung overseas relief activities and the complex problems which confront it,” a statement issued by Joseph C. Hyman, executive vice-chairman of the J.D.C., declared.
