Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, is leaving the United States tomorrow for an on-the-spot survey of Jewish refugees and Jewish communities in Central and South Africa, it was announced today by Edward M. M. Warburg, JDC chairman.
As part of his survey, Mr. Leavitt will try to learn what has happened to the 2500 Jews known to be living in the Congo Republic before the recent outbreak of violence. Mr. Leavitt will attempt to ascertain the fate of Jews remaining in the Congo, as well as the needs of those forced to flee, leaving all their possessions behind. He will also visit South Africa for a series of meetings with representatives of the Jewish Community, as well as government officials. During his absence Herbert Katzki, assistant director-general for JDC’s overseas operations, normally stationed in Geneva, Switzerland. has been assigned to JDC World Headquarters here.
