Organizations working in the refugee relief field have done a topflight job in helping give Europe’s stateless persons a new start in life, Charles Jordan, president of a conference of some 40 voluntary agencies working with refugees, told a meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee on European Migration, a group in which 24 nations are represented.
Mr. Jordan, an official of the Joint Distribution Committee, said that despite the “heroic work” done in the field, the refugee problem could not be completely eliminated. There would be, he noted, some refugees who could not find an opportunity for rehabilitation and a flow of refugees from the Communist countries.
At the opening meeting here of the fifth session of the Advisory Committee to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees today, M. Kahany, Israel’s representative to the body, was elected chairman. In making the nomination, French delegate J. Series said that it was “fitting” that the chairman should be the representative of Israel–“the country which has done so much for the refugees.”
