The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee has received from the U.S. Treasury Department licenses to pay out $3,444,000 for refugee transportation since Pearl Harbor, it was announced here today, in connection with the arrival last week of the Portuguese vessel Carvahlo Araujo with 140 refugees from Lisbon and unoccupied France whose passage was arranged by the J.D.C.
In making this announcement, the J.D.C. headquarters here stated that 7,500 persons have been helped by the J.D.C. to emigrate from Europe and Africa to the Western Hemisphere and Palestine. Among the passengers on board the Carvalho Araujo were thirty Polish refugee engineers who were en-route to Canada. This group brought to 200 the number of Polish engineers for whom the J.D.C. has booked passenger space in accordance with an arrangement with the Polish Government-in-Exile, the announcement declared.
