The Joint Distribution Committee will provide a minimum of $1,100,000 during the coming year for the work of the ORT, principal agency offering vocational training to Jews overseas, under an agreement signed this week-end, it was announced here today.
In the agreement, the JDC will give up to $1,500,000 for the ORT’s 1953 programs, with the increased amount dependent on the income of the United Jewish Appeal, from which the JDC receives the funds for its overseas activities. For the first time, the JDC has agreed to provide financial assistance for ORT schools in Israel, while continuing to aid ORT vocational training centers in Europe and Moslem areas.
Signing the agreement for the two agencies were Dr. Aron Syngalowski and Prof. William Haber representing the ORT, and Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairman of the JDC. Dr. Syngalowski is chairman of the executive committee of the World CRT Union and Prof. Haber is president of the American ORT Federation. The pact prcvides that the ORT will not conduct any independent fund-raising campaigns in the United States, but will continue its membership activities.
Other provisions of the agreement stipulate that a major portion of the JDC’s vocational training activities overseas will be carried on through the ORT. However, the JDC will continue to subsidize other economic reconstruction efforts, including loan funds, sheltered workshops and other activities not embraced by the ORT program.
