The Joint Distribution Committee announced today that its total expenditures during its nearly three and a half decades of activity now exceed $400,000,000.
Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairman of the J.D.C. who made the announcement, stated that the agency’s administration committee this week had approved a July budget of $4,277,000 for aid to distressed Jews overseas, bringing the organization’s total expenditures from October, 1914, through July, 1949, to $404,238,000.
“The more than four hundred million dollars the J.D.C. has spent is the greatest sun ever utilized to alleviate human suffering by a single, voluntarily supported welfare agency,” Mr. Leavitt said. “J.D.C. represents the magnificent conviction of the American Jewish community and other communities supporting its work that they are their brother’s keeper.”
