The Joint Distribution Committee will assist more than 400,000 needy Jews throughout the world in 1966, Charles H. Jordan, JDC director general, reported here today. He said that the beneficiaries would include 97,000 Israeli.
Mr. Jordan made his report at the end of a 10-day visit during which he conferred with President Shazar, Premier Eshkol, Ministers and Government officials and community leaders. He declared that the JDC budget for 1966 would amount to $22,000,000 to be used for various aid programs in 30 countries. He said $7,000,000 would be spent in Israel, mainly for the Malben program for aged, handicapped and sick immigrants. The rest, he reported, would be used for yeshivot and ORT training schools.
In 1965, he stated, the JDC aided more than 413,000 Jews throughout the world, including Israelis, European Jews and North African and Middle Eastern Jews. He said the loss of $7,500,000 in West German reparations, due to the completion of that program, cast a shadow on all JDC operations. The JDC had to curtail operations for that reason in almost all countries, he reported, adding that greater fund-raising efforts would be needed to find new sources of income.
