The Joint Distribution Committee has completed all arrangements for the transportation of 400 Jewish refugees who hold Palestine immigration certificates from Spain, Portugal and Tangiers to Palestine, Joseph C. Hyman, executive vice-chairman of the J.D.C., announced today.
About 300 of the refugees are from Spain and Portugal where they were maintained by the J.D.C. during their stay in these neutral lands, to which they had fled from Nazi-occupied Europe. The remaining 100 men, women and children will embark at Tangier, where the J.D.C. has maintained them. J.D.C.’s representatives, Mr. Hyman added, have supplied part of the group with clothing suitable for the trip.
In addition to the 400 who will sail on the Portuguese freighter, the Guine, the Joint Distribution Committee this year transported over 6,000 Jewish refugees to Palestine, the bulk of them from the Balkans, in a rescue program carried out jointly by the War Refugee Board, the Jewish Agency for Palestine and the J.D.C.
