The scope of Joint Distribution Committee welfare work in Europe, Asia and North Africa was outlined today by JDC social work leaders attending a five-day JDC conference here.
In Austria, social aid is provided 1, 388 persons of whom 513 are refugees. JDC-subsidized welfare services reach 2, 000 persons in Belgium, 17,000 in France, much of the latter being for newly-arrived refugees from Egypt, North Africa and Poland. JDC provides help to 1, 500 persons in West Germany. Nearly half of the 4, 700 Jews receiving help in Italy are social assistance cases.
In Israel, JDC welfare activities serve 41, 800 persons, many of them in wholly – supported hospitals and homes for the aged. The JDC programs are concerned also with the health and welfare of Jewish children in Iran, Morocco and Tunisia.
JDC assistance is provided for 80, 000 persons in Iran, 61, 000 in Morocco and 16, 500 in Tunisia. In these countries, pilot models for social assistance programs have been set up to serve as guides when more extensive assistance programs are introduced, it was reported at today’s sessions.
