JULIUS L. MEIER, FORMER GOVERNOR OF OREGON AND A LEADER IN JEWISH AFFAIRS, DIED HERE YESTERDAY AT THE AGE OF 62. HIS HEALTH HAD BEEN FAILING FOR SOME TIME.
MR. MEIER, ELECTED GOVERNOR AS AN INDEPENDENT IN 1930 HEADED A LIVELY FOUR-YEAR ADMINISTRATION. A REPUBLICAN, HE WAS FROWNED UPON BY THE PARTY ORGANIZATION, THOUGH HIS BUSINESS-LIKE ADMINISTRATION WAS WIDELY PRAISED. A RECALL PETITION AGAINST HIM IN 1933 FAILED.
HE ANNOUNCED EARLY IN 1934 THAT HE WOULD RETIRE AT THE END OF HIS TERM, AND HE RETURNED TO THE MEIER AND FRANK COMPANY, ONE OF THE LARGEST DEPARTMENT STORES IN THE WEST. HIS MANY PHILANTHROPIC ACTIVITIES INCLUDED MEMBERSHIP IN THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF THE AMERICAN JEWISH JOINT DISTRIBUTION COMMITTEE.
