The Jewish National Fund’s nurseries in Israel are ready to begin the planting of some 4,500,000 saplings in the 1954 afforestation program, the JNF announced today. The JNF will concentrate on five types of plantings, the announcement said. They are:
1. Afforestation of the hill slopes; 2. Planting of trees in avenues lining the country’s highways; 3. Planting of a “green belt” to protect newly developed agricultural areas in the Negev; 4. Planting of trees along river beds in an effort to improve the soil’s water-holding ability; and, 5. Planting of sisal trees to provide raw material for cordage manufacture.
