Dr. Harris J. Levine, president of the Jewish National Fund of America, commenting on the merger of the JNF and the Keren Hayesod Committees in Israel, said it was a strictly local administrative act, in no way affecting the autonomy and the complete independence which the Jewish National Fund of America has enjoyed for half a century and which was confirmed in a special resolution of the 24th World Zionist Congress.
“The merger of the local committees of the Jewish National Fund and the Keren Hayesod in Israel, “Dr. Levine stated, “is but an administrative step demanded by the particular conditions obtaining in the Jewish State, where both the National Fund and the Keren Hayesod are fund raising organizations and where the amalgamation of the two fund-raising machineries are deemed necessary in the interests of economy, “Dr. Levine said. The situation is, of course, altogether different in the United States, where the Jewish National Fund has an established position as a fund-raising agency for Israel, and where the Keren Hayesod as such does not engage in any fund-raising activities but is the beneficiary, along with other organizations and institutions, of the proceeds of the United Jewish Appeal.”
