Joseph Loewy, Danzig correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency and editor of a local newspaper, Danziger Echo, was arrested here today.
No reasons for his arrest were given, but it is understood that he is charged with reporting facts which emphasize that the present administration of Danzig is controlled by the Nazis. Recent editions of the paper edited by Mr. Loewy have been confiscated, and his private apartment thoroughly searched.
Dr. Bermann, editor-in-chief of the Echo, was spared arrest owing to his illness. Attempts to obtain the release of Mr. Loewy have so far proved unsuccessful.
HIS SECOND ARRESET
This is the second time that Mr. Loewy has been arrested by the Nazi-controlled Danzig authorities for his anti-Nazi reports.
Eduard Penkalla, the Berlin correspondent of the Viennese newspaper Neue Wiener Tageolatt, was arrested here yesterday when, acting upon instructions from his paper, he came to Danzig to investigate conditions here.
Mr. Penkalla is a Yugoslavian citizen and his wife is a Jewess from Holland. The Yugoslavian Minister in Warsaw intervened with the Danzig authorities today for his release. Mr. Penkalla is charged by the Nazi authorities with sending “atrocity news” from Danzig.
