Yiddish poet and author Jacob Glatstein, who died in November at the age of 75, was named this week to receive posthumously B’nai B’rith’s annual $1,000 Heritage Award “for excellence in Jewish literature.” The selections committee described Glatstein, who was born in Poland and emigrated to the US in 1914, as “the outstanding Yiddish poet of his times” and cited his “memorable poems and writings of the vanished world of the shtetl and his enduring interpretations of Yiddishkeit, its values and its lyricism.” Formal presentation of the award will be made Feb. 20 in New York, at a public “tribute to Jacob Glatstein” session at the Waldorf Astoria, held in conjunction with the annual meeting of B’nai B’rith’s commission on adult Jewish education.
