Charlotte Jacobson, chairperson of the World Zionist Organization-American Section, expressed “amazement” at what she termed the “negative statement” issued by the Union of Councils for Soviet Jews on the issue of noshrim. The Council, at its annual meeting last month in Washington, expressed concern over the announced change in the Soviet Jewish resettlement policy by the Jewish Agency. (See Sept. 24 Daily News Bulletin.) In her statement, Mrs. Jacobson said:
“At a time when the Soviet Union’s doors are virtually closed to the emigration of Jews — now at its lowest ebb — and when there is so much internal harassment and new arrests, the only subject that this group is concerned about is the change of noshrim policy. I can only assume they are either ignorant of or oblivious to the fact that this policy is being adopted to counteract Soviet criticism that the Israeli visas of Russian Jews are a sham and subterfuge abused by them to go elsewhere than Israel, and that the Soviet Union therefore claims it is justified in closings its doors.”
