Gaynor I. Jacobson, executive vice president of HIAS, stated today on his return from Italy that he was pleased with the increased flow of Jews from the Soviet Union. Informed sources are predicting that 50,000 will leave this year for Israel and other countries compared with 28,000 in 1978. “We hope that greater numbers will choose to go to Israel, and we shall continue to assist all those referred to us by the Jewish Agency. I had the opportunity not only to see the large group off to the States last Tuesday, but also to mingle with the Soviet Jews we are processing in Italy. There are over 10,000 of them there.”
