Shmuel Rechtmann, the Likud MK serving a 3.1/2 year prison term for accepting bribes, tendered his resignation from the Knesset today at the urging of his faction colleagues. He was visited at the Ramla jail yesterday by Avraham Sharir, the Likud Whip and Haim Corfu, chairman of the coalition faction. His probable successor will be David Stern, chairman of the Building Contractors Association, who is next on the Likud Knesset list. Jailed last February Rechtmann had been the only Knesset member to retain his seat while incarcerated. He agreed to quit following the Supreme Court’s rejection Sunday of an appeal to reverse his conviction.
