Jascha Horenstein, Violinist and Conductor, Dies At-74

Jascha Horenstein, the Kiev-born Jewish conductor, died today at the age of 74 in a hospital he entered last week for heart surgery. A violin prodigy at six, he had struggled for many years for recognition in the musical world and attained International fame as a conductor only in his late middle age.

Mr. Horenstein was taken to Germany by his family as a child and studied music in Koenigsberg and in Vienna. He made his conducting debut with the Vienna Symphony in 1923 and later was appointed conductor of the Dusseldorf Opera. Mr. Horenstein was never involved, in Jewish affairs. He was a guest conductor of the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra.
