Sen. Jacob K. Javits, New York Republican, expressed “deep concern” today about the interruption of West German arms deliveries to Israel. He indicated he feared an aggravation of the tense situation in the Middle East, as a result of the West German action.
Rep. Leonard Farbstein, New York Democrat, sharply criticized the West German decision to stop further arms deliveries to Israel. “The Bonn Government,” he said, “not only walked out on Israel, they walked out on the United States.” He referred to the West German agreement with the U.S. that the Bonn regime would supply Israel with an arms to equalize the armaments balance in the Middle East.
The New York Democrat called the West German retreat “a further victory for Nasser’s aggressive diplomacy.” He emphasized that the United States now must take further steps to assure the security of Israel “in order to obviate the possibility of a conflagration in the Middle East.” He suggested that now was a proper time to revive consideration of a U.S.-Israel mutual assistance treaty. Mr. Farbstein is a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
