Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, national chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee 1945 campaingn, announced today that the JDC will immediately accelerate its relief and rehabilitation program, now operating in sixteen countries in Europe, to meet the urgent needs resulting from the liberation of all of Europe.
Rabbi Wise indicated that the release of thousands of Jews from concentration camps “creates a sharp crisis in relief needs.” He declared that the JDC has appropriated nearly $12,000,000 during the first five months of 1945 for relief and rehabilitation overseas. The coming months will bring unprecedented requests from displaced Jews who have returned to their homes, he said, and from communities now accessible to JDC relief shipments. These requests will necessitate the acceleration of monthly appropriations.
