Over 1.7 million Jews have been uprooted from Eastern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East since the end of World War II. Louis D. Horowitz, director general of the Joint Distribution Committee, told members of the 1971 United Jewish Appeal study mission to Europe and Israel. He said the JDC would be helping some 300,000 individuals this year–160,000 in Europe, 97,000 in Israel and 44,000 in North Africa and Iran.
