The Joint Distribution Committee will provide $1,000,000 in financial aid to 156 yeshivot and to cultural and religious programs in Israel in 1974, it was reported this week by Samuel L. Haber, JDC executive vice-chairman. The yeshivot, which have a combined enrollment of some 21,700 students, will receive monthly subsidies amounting to between 10 and 15 percent of their operating budgets, Haber said. Another 44 religious institutions, not under the monthly subsidy program, will receive special holiday grants.
Funds will also be provided for the improvement of dining room and dormitory facilities, Haber continued There are close to 15,000 students living in yeshiva dormitories. The JDC program includes assistance to over 500 refugee rabbis; 30 scholarships for teacher training during the year; 11 research fellowships; more than 50 scholarships and community fellowships; and funding for feeding programs, health insurance and loan funds for both the yeshivot and the students, he added.
