A record $60,759,000 was appropriated in the first nine months of 1947 by the Joint Distribution Committee for the relief and rehabilitation of stricken Jews overseas, constituting the largest sum ever provided in a given year by a voluntary, non-governmental relief agency, it was disclosed yesterday by Edward M.M. Warburg, JDC chairman.
The record sum resulted when the Committee’s administrative body approved September allocations of $5,261,000 for its program aiding nearly a million Jews in twenty-five European and other overseas areas. The more than sixty million dollars appropriated by the Committee to date surpasses the $58,516,000 it furnished in all of 1946, and stands as the greatest amount it has provided in any of its nearly thirty-three years of existence, Mr. Warburg stated.
