The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee contributed $10,000 to the Yugoslav Red Cross for earthquake relief. Making the presentation to Vasa Veskovic, Consul General of Yugoslavia at the Consulate in New York City, were Donald M. Robinson, JDC president; Henry Taub, a member of the executive committee; and Ralph 1. Goldman, executive vice president.
A strong earthquake on April 15 caused wide-spread damage along the southern Adriatic coast, killed and maimed hundreds of people and left tens of thousands homeless. The shocks, which were said to be worse than the quake which struck Skople in 1963 when 1000 people were killed, were felt as far away as Albania, Greece, Italy, Bulgaria and Austria. In making the presentation, Robinson expressed the sympathy and concern of the American Jewish community. Robinson praised the Yugoslav people and the government for being so hospitable to their Jewish community and so cooperative with the JDC.
