Ethiopian Jewish mothers and their preschool children will take part in an educational program designed to ease their absorption into Israeli society, thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Joint Distribution Committee, it was announced here.
The program, developed by researchers at the National Council of Jewish Women Research Institute for Innovation in Education at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, is an adaptation of two Research Institute projects: HIPPY (Home Instruction Program for Pres school Youngsters, HAETGAR in Israel) and HATAF (Home Activities for Toddlers and Their Families).
Both programs train disadvantaged mothers to teach their children at home to develop their intellectual ability and prepare them for future success in school. The HIPPY program has been so successful in Israel that it has been exported to countries around the world, including four cities in the U.S.
