The Joint Distribution Committee and the National Refugee Service today opened a joint drive for funds in New York called the United New York Appeal.
Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, chairman of the campaign, Henry Ittleson, Governor Herbert H. Lehman and Mrs. Felix M. Warburg, honorary chairmen; Paul Baerwald, Benjamin J. Buttenwieser and Mrs. David Levy, co-chairmen, and Edward M.M. Warburg, chairman of the executive committee.
At a press conference at the Hotel Commodore today, Dr. Wise announced the aims of the drive, reviewed the work of the J.D.C. in 50 countries throughout the world and reported on the progress of the refugee aid and resettlement program of the N.R.S.
“As the largest Jewish community,” the chairman said, “New York City has a triple responsibility in this decisive period in Jewish life: to provide for the overseas aid and emigration program of the Joint Distribution Committee; to carry the major burden of national resettlement of refugees in America, and to make full provisions for New York’s own refugee needs and preparatory program.”
The 1941 effort would take the form of some 200 trades and borough campaigns, enlisting the aid of several thousand volunteer workers.
