The director general of the Joint Distribution Committee has estimated that there are only 13,000 Jews left in Poland, a majority of them elderly. He said that Jewish departures from Poland in 1969 would total about 3,000.
Louis D. Horowitz spoke to members of the United Jewish Appeal’s young leadership mission which stopped here enroute to Israel. He said there was a steady stream of Jews out of Eastern European countries and a trickle from Middle Eastern countries. He reported that Jewish arrivals from Poland have increased since the Warsaw regime announced last month that it would restrict the issuance of exit permits starting Sept. 1. Mr. Horowitz said that last year the JDC served 340,000 Jews in 27 countries at a cost of $23 million. The JDC is a beneficiary of the UJA.
