Orthodox Jews will be exempted from Jersey City’s alternate-side parking regulations during the High Holy Days under a program approved by Mayor Thomas Whelan. Orthodox Jews have been asked to put a notice “Observing Holy Day” on the windshield of their cars. Policemen accompanying the city’s street cleaners have been directed not to write parking violation tickets on cars with such notices.
The special exemption will not be needed on Yom Kippur because it falls on Wednesday, a day when no street cleaning is scheduled. The special agreement does not include areas where there are parking meters, the Mayor’s office said.
