Considerable anxiety is felt in official circles here regarding the safety of the High Commissioner, Sir Herber Samuel, who has gone to visit the northernmost Jewish colony, Methullah.
Ten of the British gendarmes, returning after having escorted the High Commissioner to Metullah were ambushed by brigands. Three of the gendarmes were killed, and two wounded, and one was captured. The attack occurred at Ain-el Nelahah, near the Syrian frontier.
The anxiety in official quarters regarding Sir Herbert’s safety is caused by the fact that he is camping with an escort of native Palestine gendarmes, who took over the escort duty from the British gendarmes just before the ambush occurred.
