The Jerusalem City Council has approved an IL 650 million project to convert the former no-man’s-land between East and West Jerusalem into a modern complex of shops, offices, hotels and apartments. The now shabby area between the Jaffa Gate and downtown West Jerusalem, known as the Mamilla district, is occupied by parking lots and deteriorated buildings, all of which will be razed.
The plans to rehabilitate Mamilla into a modern business and residential area were drafted by the architects Moshe Safdie and Gilbert Weil. Work is expected to begin this year but the entire project will take 15-20 years to complete.
