Easing of the martial law regulations in Jerusalem and the withdrawal of all military rule can be expected soon, if the Jewish community cooperates, Brigadier Edmund B. Davies, commander of “Operation Hippo,” the designation for the martial law areas of Jerusalem, said today.
Announcing that the curfew will be lifted in Jerusalem between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Davies added that the sooner assistance in carping terrorism is forthcoming from the Jews, the sooner martial law will be lifted. He made this statement shortly before receiving a delegation from the Jerusalem Jewish Community Council which demanded that martial law be revoked immediately. Davies promised a reply by Monday.
Communting on the co##ique issued last night by the government, in which it stated that some assistance had been received from members of the Jewish community, despite the refusal of the official bodies to cooperate in running down terrorists, tes Hagurah radio said today that the authorities will not succeed in “driving a weigh between the Yishn? and its representative institutions.” The broadcast said that although some individual Jews may be cooperating with the Criminal Investigation Divid ?”the organized Yishav–despite its opposition to terrorism–will not be converted into a branck of the CID and will continue its own fight against the terrorists.”
PIPALISE CUT IN HAIFA AREA; HAIL SERVISE DIERUPTED
The Iraq Petroleum Campany’s pipeline was blasted in three places today by five amced men deseribed by police as Jews. The attackers drove into the refinery area in a small trunk and planted their explosives near vital valves, three of which were destroyed. During the night an oil train was blested on the Haifa-Lydda line and 23 tank cars damaged.
All rail service was suspended until noon today when the engineers refused to take out any trains fearing terrorist attacks. An engineer was killed and a fireman injured when a train was blown up a few miles outside of Jerusalem last night. Servies was finally resumed when the government promised to give the trains heavy military escorte, but this evening two mines exploded under a train on the Lyrida-Gaza run.
A mine assembly plant was discovered today in the martial law area of Jerusalem. Troops found a quantity of explosives, several milk cans and several British uniforms.
