The Jerusalem Labor Contracting Bureau affiliated with the Jerusalem Workers’ Council, an adjunct of the Histadrut-Haovdim, is about to embark upon works aggregating £4,000 a month. It was only registered and started operation three years ago, and has now become a co-operative organization.
At first the Burean only undertook road and other public works labor share had been minute. But little by little it entered the building market, and that phase of construction now constitues its major activity. At first work from private persons amounted only to 4 percent. of the the total turn-over; it now amounts to 55 percent. Costs have reduced from 10 percent. overhead to 6.14 percent., enabling a larger measure of cmo petition with other contractors.
During the first year the turnover on jobs was £2,000 in the second it rose to £18,000, and during the first half of the third years to £15,000. From a monthly turnover of £175 in the first years it has now risen to £4,000 a month.
