Despite last-minute efforts by Mayor Teddy Kollek, Jerusalem’s municipal employes went out on a “warning strike” today. The employes had threatened earlier this week that they would engage in a two-day walk-out unless their salaries were brought up to the wage levels being paid to municipal employes in Tel Aviv. Mr. Kollek had tried to get the workers to delay their action, but failed.
Meanwhile, the Government today ordered all Ministers to survey every phase of the country’s economic activities, especially relating to unemployment and the financial situation of Israel’s economy. The Government stated it will initiate an overall debate in the Knesset (Parliament) on the Israeli economy, as soon as the “extensive studies” have been completed and reports are submitted by the members of the Cabinet.
