Jerusalem’s Mayor S. Z. Shragai arrived here today by plane from Israel and was greeted at Idlewild Airport by special representatives of Mayor Vincent R. Impellitteri, of the Israel consulate, the Jewish Agency, and rabbinical and Orthodox groups. He was taken to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, where he will stay during his visit to New York, in a motorcade escorted by 20 motorcycle policemen.
At a press conference later in the day, Mayor Shragai outlined the three basic reasons for his visit to this country: to invite American Jews and non-Jews to attend Jerusalem’s celebration of its 3,000th anniversary this year; to repay the courtesy call Mayor Impellitteri paid to Jerusalem; and, to tour the United States in behalf of the United Jewish Appeal. He also outlined in detail his city’s plans for the 3,000th anniversary celebration.
