Lewis Weinstein, chairman of the National Community Relations Advisory Council, told the Jewish War Veterans at their 67th annual national convention today that “no amount of threats, whether intentional or unintentional, should deter the American Jewish community, or any religious, racial or national group, from asserting its views and going to the courts for the preservation of its rights.”
“The editorial in ‘America,’ ” Mr.Weinstein said, “is shocking and unfortunate, especially since that magazine has always stood for basic American concepts,. The editorial’s tone of warning or threat, I’m sure, cannot fully reflect the views of its editors. I am hopeful that these editors will, in a future issue, correct the misapprehension generated by their editorial.
“Surely, the editors of ‘America, ‘ ” Mr. Weinstein pointed out, “do not want Jewish groups to stop asserting their beliefs in basic principles for reasons of ‘security’ or as a ‘bargain purchase.’ Indeed, the whole tenor of the word ‘bargain’ has an intemperate sound. It is ironic that in the 19th Century it was the Catholics who were in the forefront of the battle for separation of church and state. “
