Professor Hugo Steinhaus has been elected Dean of the Mathematical Faculty at Lemberg University, the first time that a Jew has been elected to such an office at this University.
Professor Steinhaua, who is 44 years of age, was born at Jaslo, in Poland, and became a lecturer at Lemberg University in 1917. He was appointed Professor of Mathematics there in 1925. He is the author of many mathematical works, and has done much important research work. Since 1929 he has been publishing with Professor S. Banach an annual entitled “Studia Mathematica”.
