A Jew was stabbed to death in Tiberias today and an Arab notable was seriously wounded when terrorists set fire to his house in Nablus and fired a volley of shots into it. The Jew, Abraham Mizrachi, was stabbed in the neck as he walked in a Tiberias park. Several Arabs were arrested in connection with the wounding of the Arab, Ismail Methmoud, in Nablus.
All Arab taxi drivers in Hebron were arrested this morning in the search for the murderers of J.L. Starkey, British archaeologist who was slain Monday. Seven other Arabs were arrested last night. The search is being personally conducted by Inspector General of Police Alan Saunders, and Sir Charles Tegart and Sir David Petrie, advisers on police affairs.
Simple ceremonies marked the opening of Rockefeller Museum, in which Mr. Starkey was to have participated. High Commissioner Sir Arthur Wauchope and other notables who were scheduled to speak did not attend. Memorial services for Starkey were held this afternoon at the Hebrew University, with prominent members of the faculty delivering eulogies.
The death sentences of two Arabs who murdered a Jew, Mendel Mintz, were yesterday commuted to life imprisonment. The Arabs were to have been executed at Acre yesterday but were given a last-minute reprieve. A civil court at Haifa sentenced Mendel Segal, Jewish watchman employed by the Egged Bus Company, to five years in prison for possession of a loaded revolver. The sentence will be appealed.
