Professor Monroe E. Deutsch, for years Dean of Men at the University of California, has been elected to the vice-presidency of the institution. He is believed to be the second Jew to occupy such a position in an American college.

There is a heavy Jewish enrollment at the University of California, which is one of the largest state universities in this country. A Jew, Mortimer Fleishhacker, is a member of the board of regents, while several Jews, besides Dean Deutsch, occupy places on the faculty. Among the latter are Professor Lippman, who is Dean of the Graduate School; Professor Loewenberg of the Department of Philosophy; Professor Alexander Kaun of the Department of Slavic Cultures; and Professor Max Popper of the Semitics Department.
