Moses R. Wiener, one of the pioneers of the Polish textile industry, former multi-millionaire ruined during the war, died in extreme poverty yesterday. He was eighty-three years old.
Mr. Wiener, who was the oldest citizen of Lodz, the Polish textile center, and was the first Jewish textile manufacturer, was a strictly observant Jew and a member of the Lodz Jewish communal board. He was a follower of the Chassidic Rabbi of Gora Kalwarija and was the financial supporter of the rabbi’s enterprises.
During the world war, when the Germans entered Poland, Wiener was ruined because the machinery of his factories was requisitioned by the occupation authorities. He sold his real estate to meet his obligations which were mainly held abroad, leaving himself penniless.
