Miss Monia Michael, who has just returned from the Boston convention of the American Legion, where she was signally honored by the legion auxiliary for her part in originating “Poppy Day,” was officially welcomed by the city today amid elaborate demonstrations.
The Georgia University R. O. T. C. unit and the university band formed an escort for Miss Michael in the parade to the city hall, where Mayor A. C. Dudley extended the official welcome. Delegations from Athens’ civic and patriotic organizations were represented among the large crowds that participated in the tribute to Miss Michael.
At Boston Miss Michael was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal of the legion auxiliary at the same time that a similar honor was bestowed upon Mrs. Calvin Coolidge. Miss Michael, who is a member of a prominent Jewish family here and has taken an active part in civic affairs, is popularly known throughout the country as the “Poppy Lady.”
