Jewish activist and journalist Ben Zion Leuchter died after suffering from ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Leuchter, who lived in Key Biscayne, Fla., was a former president of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. He also served as a longtime JTA director and a longtime chair of JTA’s Editorial Policy Committee.
