Jewish activists are optimistic that the 2009 World Conference Against Racism will be held at the United Nations in Geneva.
The 2001 conference in Durban, South Africa, dissolved into a festival of anti-Israel and anti-Jewish hatred. South Africa had indicated interest in hosting the anti-racism conference again.
But Jewish activists monitoring preparations in Geneva for the global gathering said Thursday that some U.N. officials and Western countries want to avoid a repeat of ’01 and are pushing for the ’09 event to be on the United Nations’ turf, with guarantees of certain protocol and security. Regardless, activists say they expect Arab and Muslim member-states to continue their tradition of singling out Israel in international forums for its treatment of Palestinians.
