The doors of the United States “have been closed tighter than the doors of any other nation, and our principle of asylum has been conspicuous by its absence,” declared Dr. Israel Goldstein in an address last night on the Jewish Daily Bulletin hour broadcast over station WEVD. Dr. Goldstein, who is rabbi of congregation B’nai Jeshurun and president of the Jewish National fund of America, was introduced by Herman Bernstein, editor of the Bulletin He spoke on “Is America Doing Its Share for Germany’s Victims?”
Discussing the new government ruling on immigration, Dr. Goldstein declared that it was not enough. “I believe that if our country would wish to be ranked in the forefront of asylum-offering nations, it would have to do more,” he said. “A real test of how much the principle of the right of asylum means to us would. it seems to me, be the passing by congress of legislation exempting victims of political and religious oppression from the quota restriction altogether. Another test would be their exemption from the ‘public charge’ restriction.”
