The Jewish Agency announced today that registration was opened for the third annual America-Israel Secondary School Program which accepts American high school students for a year’s study at a high school in Israel. The American youngsters earn full credit for their regular high school studies in addition to receiving special courses in the Hebrew language and Israeli studies.

According to Dr. Mordecai S. Chertoff, director of the program which is sponsored by the department of education and culture of the Jewish Agency’s American section, there are 43 American teenagers presently studying at the Alonei Yitzhak high school. The program was launched for the 1967-68 academic year when it was limited to 10th graders. It was expanded for the 1968-69 school year to include 10th (sophomore) and 11th (junior) grade students. The third academic year will open in September, 1969 and will be preceded by a six-week course in Hebrew, beginning in July at an Ulpan in Israel, Dr. Chertoff said. General courses are taught in English and Judaica courses are given in Hebrew as far as possible. The curriculum has been approved by an advisory committee of American educators and is supervised by the Israel Ministry of Education.
