The Jewish Agency’s budget for the coming year will go to 160,000,000 pounds, 15 percent more than last year and the highest in the history of the Zionist movement, Eliahu Dobkin, member of the Jewish Agency executive, today told a meeting of directors of the Keren Hayesod, fund-raising arm of the Agency.
The increase in Agency expenditures, Mr. Dobkin declared, was due to a government cut in allocations for housing in the face of increased security expenditures. Also, he pointed out, immigration is expected to increase to 52,000 this year and more money is needed both for the transportation of Jews from Eastern Europe who are able to come to Israel and to consolidate settlements established in recent years.
Mr. Dobkin reported on the fact that in the United States the UJA had increased its collections this past year by over $25,000,000. After the meeting, the first of the new directors chosen at the last World Zionist Congress in April, a statement was issued taking note of the “plague” of separate collections carried on abroad by Israeli institutions which do not have importance for the country or “which simply do not exist.”
