The Jewish Agency for Palestine has approved plans for the evacuation of at least 50,000 Jews from widely-dispersed danger areas, and their resettlement in Israel within the next 12 months, Mrs. Rose L. Halprin, acting chairman of the Jewish Agency, announced today on her return from Israel.
Mrs. Halprin participated in sessions at the Jewish Agency executive and the Zionist General Council, the supreme bodies of the World Zionist movement, at which these plans were discussed and voted.
Mrs. Halprin reported also on the agreement signed by the Israel Government and the Jewish Agency spelling out the Agency’s status and functions in Israel. Under the League of Nations mandate, the Jewish Agency was recognized as the spokesman for all Jewry on matters relating to Palestine. The agreement with the Israel Government, based on a somewhat similar principle, recognizes the Jewish Agency as the coordinator in Israel of all voluntary, social welfare efforts undertaken in Israel by Jewish overseas groups. This represents the formalization of a de-facto situation.
