Louis Pincus, the new chairman of the Jewish Agency, reiterated here today his fears that, if new immigrants to Israel are not adequately and promptly absorbed, “there is a danger that a second Israel will crystallize itself, and we shall have the proverbial two nations in one country–the rich and the poor.”
Discussing the problems facing a meeting of a special committee of the Jewish Agency and the World Zionist Organization, which will open for four days tomorrow in Geneva, Mr. Pincus said on a stop here, that it was of the highest urgency that “greater depth” be achieved “in Zionist work in order to meet the challenge of our decade” in such absorption. The special committee was named at the last World Zionist Congress to study the question of reorganization of the Zionist bodies. Some 50 representatives will take part in the meeting. The committee will submit its report to the next World Zionist Actions Committee meeting.
Mr. Pincus asserted that complete absorption of immigrants in Israel–which he defined as “complete and total absorption into life and society in Israel with a standard of living commensurate with the standards of the old settlers” — was also “the responsibility of Jews in other countries.” Without world Jewry, he added, “it cannot be done.”
